Tips

I personally found flowers to be the most difficult part of my wedding planning, largely because I didn't know much about them and every florist had different information (some that was contradictory to other florists). If you are on a budget, it is a good idea to buy your flowers whole sale or in bulk from places like Sam's Club and make your own arrangements.

  • Color of the flower does not affect the cost
  • An easy way to cut costs is to eliminate flowers where they don't have to be. For example, replace an arrangement with a vase full of water and a floating candle on top.
  • Silk flowers are not always cheaper than fresh flowers (or prettier!)
  • Buy your own vases to cut costs. Florists can really make a bunch of money off of you by letting you "rent" their vases. Hit up your local craft stores for cheaper vases.
  • If you do purchase your own vases, you need to have all the measurements ready to give the florist when you discuss your flower options.
  • Flower prices will vary month to month by what is in season
  • Flower prices will vary by location. Flowers that are cheap in Hawaii are going to be expensive in Oklahoma.
  • When you meet with your florist, ask her upfront what flowers she will have access to at the time of your wedding.

Things to have prepared when you meet with your florist:

  • Know how many guests(approximately)
  • Your colors
  • What flowers you like and which ones you don't
  • Your budget
  • Whether or not you want flowers on your cake (the florist must do this, not the baker)
  • How many reception tables
  • How many rows of chairs at the ceremony (or pews) if you want to decorate the aisle
  • How many bouquets (bride, bridesmaids)
  • Decide if you want bouquets or pomanders for the bridesmaids (most pomanders cost around $50+ each depending on size and flowers used)
  • How many boutonnieres (fathers, officiate, groomsmen, ring bearer, ushers, other important people)
  • How many corsages (mothers, grandmothers, other important females in the wedding)
  • Decide if you want a "toss" bouquet or if you want to toss your own bouquet
  • If you want rose petals to decorate the aisle and tables
  • Arrangement for the sign in table
  • Arrangement for the cake table
  • Arrangement for the wedding favor table
  • Flowers for the flower girl
  • Do you want flowers behind the wedding party during the ceremony?
  • Do you want floral wreaths for doors?

I have learned from experience- no florist likes to tell straight up which flowers are expensive and which ones are not.

Less Expensive

  • Roses
  • Carnations
  • Hydrangeas
  • Daisies
  • Spider Mum

Expensive

  • Calla Lillies
  • Orchids
  • Pomanders- They're expensive because they have to be made fresh because the foam absorbs all the water from the flowers.
